Tapered roller bearing
Tapered roller bearings are special (line-contact) roller bearings. The roller of the bearing has the shape of a truncated cone. This allows very high forces to be transmitted in radial and axial directions. Tapered roller bearings are usually made entirely of steel and are not self-retaining. As a subgroup of roller bearings, tapered roller bearings combine the best properties of radial ball bearings with those of cylindrical roller bearings.
This means that the outer ring and inner part (inner ring, rolling element and cage) can normally be mounted separately. Tapered roller bearings are generally installed in pairs, arranged as mirror images.
Depending on the application, the O or X arrangement is preferred.
Tapered roller bearings and their applications
The main areas of application are highly loaded industrial gearboxes as well as shipbuilding and vehicle construction. This subtype of roller bearing is also used in tractors (agricultural technology), vehicle construction and construction machinery. Tapered roller bearings are often used in electric motors to withstand high radial forces. Tapered roller bearings ensure very precise bearing support here. Well-known manufacturers are SKF or FAG.Tapered roller bearings place higher demands on mounting and must be adjusted (bearing clearance). They are not self-retaining, which makes it possible to install the inner ring (with rollers) and cage separately.
